About area units
Real estate and land in the United States are measured in square feet, acres, and square miles, while most other countries use square meters and hectares. One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, and one square mile is exactly 640 acres. Floor plans in the US list square feet; in most of Europe and Asia they list square meters.
Because area is a length squared, conversion factors are squared too. Since 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm, 1 square inch is exactly 6.4516 cm². The same rule explains why 1 m² equals 10,000 cm², not 100.
Tips
- Do not apply a linear factor to an area: 1 m equals 100 cm, but 1 m² equals 10,000 cm².
- A hectare is roughly 2.5 acres (about 2.47), a handy approximation when comparing farm or property sizes across countries.
- One square meter is roughly 10.8 square feet, useful for a quick check of apartment listings.
