Cooking measurements are mostly small volumes: teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, and pints, alongside milliliters. Their sizes vary by country, which is a common source of recipe errors. One US tablespoon equals three US teaspoons, or half a US fluid ounce, about 14.8 mL.

About cooking units

The US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, about 236.6 mL. The metric cup used in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and elsewhere is 250 mL, and the traditional UK cup is half an imperial pint, about 284 mL. US and UK fluid ounces and pints also differ: the US pint is 16 US fl oz, and the imperial pint is 20 imperial fl oz.

Volume does not convert directly to weight. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar have very different masses, so baking recipes that list grams are more reliable than those using cups.
