Density converter

Density is mass per unit volume. The SI unit is the kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m³). Grams per cubic centimeter are common in chemistry and materials science, where 1 g/cm³ equals exactly 1,000 kg/m³. Pure water has a density close to 1 g/cm³ near 4 °C, which makes it a convenient reference.

About density units

US engineering often uses pounds per cubic foot or pounds per cubic inch, and liquids such as fuel are sometimes described in pounds per gallon. Because the US and imperial gallons differ, lb/gal values depend on which gallon is meant.

Specific gravity, the ratio of a substance's density to that of water, is numerically almost the same as density in g/cm³. Density changes with temperature, and for gases also with pressure.
