Volume converter
Volume measures the three-dimensional space a substance occupies. The SI unit is the cubic meter (m³), but the liter is far more common in daily life. One liter is exactly one cubic decimeter (dm³), and one milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter (cm³, often written cc), which is why medical doses and engine sizes use either label.

About volume units
The US and UK both use gallons, pints, and fluid ounces, but the units differ. The US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L, while the imperial (UK) gallon is exactly 4.54609 L. A US pint holds 16 US fluid ounces, whereas an imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, so a UK pint of beer is noticeably larger than a US pint.
The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, a wine-gallon standard inherited from 18th-century Britain. The imperial gallon was introduced in 1824. Crude oil is traded in barrels of exactly 42 US gallons, about 159 liters.
Tips
- Always confirm whether a recipe, fuel price, or product label uses US or imperial gallons and pints; the imperial units are about 20% larger.
- Cubic units scale with the cube of length: 1 m³ equals 1,000 liters and 1,000,000 cm³.
- The oil barrel (bbl) is a volume unit used mainly for petroleum; other industries may use barrels of different sizes.
